FarU universities sign agreement to establish the Fahrenheit Union of Universities Brain Disease Centre

The Medical University of Gdańsk, Gdańsk University of Technology, University of Gdańsk and The Fahrenheit Union of Universities in Gdańsk have signed an agreement to establish a new entity - the Fahrenheit Union of Universities Translational Brain Disease Centre. The idea behind the project is to strengthen cooperation between research teams from the three universities in the field of neuroscience, with particular emphasis on projects initially aimed at clinical applications.

The centre will bring together groups representing various scientific disciplines, including biology, psychology, technical sciences, and mathematics, interested in carrying out basic projects with clinical applications. The establishment of the unit was preceded by expanding cooperation between the Adult Neurology Clinic of the MUG, the Department of Molecular Biology of the UG, the Department of Biotechnology and Microbiology of the GdańskTech, and the Department of Biomedical Engineering of the GdańskTech. The Centre's development directions include, among others, the application of molecular biology research methods in combination with in vitro and in vivo experimental modelling in the field of neurodegenerative diseases, as well as mathematical modelling and the application of deep learning and artificial intelligence techniques to improve the diagnosis and personalisation of brain disease therapies. The basic concept of the platform is to conduct translational - so-called from bench to bedside - projects which require cooperation between experts from theoretically distant disciplines, including those that are usually present in medical universities only to a limited extent or selectively.

The Translational Brain Disease Centre of the Fahrenheit Union of Universities in Gdańsk was established on the initiative of prof. Bartosz Karaszewski, Head of the Adult Neurology Clinic at the Medical University of Gdańsk. The concept was presented during a meeting of the Fahrenheit Union of Universities in Gdańsk and met with great interest.

The Centre is the result of the evolution of a research unit at the Medical University of Gdańsk: Brain Disease Centre, established in 2022 as part of the ‘Excellence Initiative - Research University’ programme of the Medical University of Gdańsk. The agreement initiating the activities of the Translational Brain Disease Centre of the Fahrenheit Union of Universities in Gdańsk is the first initiative of this type established within the three universities forming FarU. The agreement was drafted with the active participation of scientists representing each of the universities (prof. Bartosz Karaszewski, prof. Grzegorz Węgrzyn, dr hab. Anna Stanisławska-Sachadyn) and a team from The Fahrenheit Union of Universities in Gdańsk and the IDUB Office at MUG. The centre is open to all research initiatives that fit into the concept of translational neuroscience.
