The research.com portal has announced a global ranking of scientists with the highest D-index (Hirsch index for a given field, reflecting the frequency of citations of their works within a given field). Eight researchers from the University of Gdańsk were included in this prestigious group.

The bibliometric data used to compile the ‘World's Best Scientists 2025’ list was collected in November 2024. The minimum D-index value required for a researcher to be included in the ranking was set individually for each field, taking into account the specific nature of the field of science. The largest number of scientists from the University of Gdańsk with a high citation index represent the fields of Chemistry and Biology and Evolution.

Chemistry (in order of ranking):

  • prof. dr hab. Piotr Stepnowski,
  • prof. dr hab. Józef Adam Liwo
  • prof. dr hab. Piotr Skurski.

Biology and evolution (in order of ranking):

  • prof. dr Marc-Andrė Selosse (visiting professor)
  • prof. dr hab. Dariusz Jakubas
  • prof. dr hab. Lech Stempniewicz

Prof. dr hab. Grzegorz Węgrzyn (Molecular Biology) ranked very high in his field, proving to be the second most frequently cited Polish researcher in this area. Dr Markus Grassl from the International Centre for Theory Of Quantum Technologies (Computer Sciences) was also included in the global ranking of scientists with a high D-index.

Prof. dr Marc-Andrė Selosse, who has been associated with the Department of Plant Taxonomy and Nature Conservation of the Faculty of Biology at the University of Gdańsk as a visiting professor for several years, was recognised in two fields: Biology and Evolution, and Plant Science and Agronomy.
