Want to help the planet, reduce your carbon footprint and look after your health at the same time? Join our ‘Bike to University’ campaign! The fifth edition of the campaign, co-organised by the University of Gdańsk and Gdańsk University of Technology as part of the Fahrenheit Universities initiative, will run from 13 April until the end of September this year. Register today!

On Monday, 13 April, the next - and fifth - edition of the ‘Bike to University’ competition will kick off, aimed at all members of the academic community at the University of Gdańsk who care about the environment, enjoy an active lifestyle, or wish to change their travel habits. Both staff and students and PhD students at our university can take part in the competition (in two separate categories).

Participation in the competition involves regularly commuting from home to the university and back by bicycle (including electric bicycles), scooter (including electric scooters) and personal mobility devices (PMDs). It is permitted to cover part of the distance by public transport, but this is not counted towards the daily distance travelled by bicycle, scooter or PTA.

Rules of participation

As was the case last year, in this year’s edition, which will run from 13 April to 30 September, participants can compete in both categories either individually or as a team, forming a team of 4 staff members or 4 students/PhD students from the University of Gdańsk following individual registration. Registration (available from 1 April) and the recording of journeys take place on the website: https://www.rowery.ug.edu.pl, where only journeys from home to the university are recorded.

New participants can register individually throughout the duration of the campaign, whilst teams can be registered until 30 April this year. Individual participants from previous editions do not need to register again, but if they wish to take part in the team competition, they must register their team, even if it took part in last year’s edition of the campaign under the same name.

Participants may make a maximum of two journeys per day, totalling no more than 10 journeys per week. When registering a journey, participants must provide only the date of the journey - the default distance for each journey is the value declared in the registration form as the distance from their place of residence to the university. Information regarding journeys to/from the university must be entered no later than two days after the date of the journey. Data regarding leisure trips cannot be entered on the website.

The rules for individual and team registration are described in the Terms and Conditions of the campaign, available on the competition website: https://www.rowery.ug.edu.pl/. There, you can keep track of the rankings of the top participants and teams in terms of the number of journeys from home to university and back, and check the estimated reduction in CO₂ emissions released into the atmosphere thanks to participation in the campaign.

The organisers have prepared prizes for the top three individual participants and the top two teams, separately in each category. Gifts are also planned for all participants who, during the competition, complete at least 70 and at least 120 journeys respectively in the individual competition. Details in the Rules and Regulations.

The results of the competition will be announced after its conclusion, at a time and place designated by the Organiser.
