Statement by
the Praesidium of the Conference of Rectors of Academic Schools in Poland
from May 9, 2025,
on the tragic events at the Jagiellonian University and the University of Warsaw
We are deeply moved by the murders and acts of violence that affected the communities of the Jagiellonian University and the University of Warsaw on 29 April and 6 May. We extend our heartfelt sympathy and solidarity to the families and loved ones of the victims and to the communities of both universities.
We cannot remain silent in the face of these horrific events, which have taken human lives and injured many more, and which have robbed those who work and study at our universities of their sense of security. We do not condone any form of violence and are committed to working together to prevent it. We reject policies that neglect mental health and disregard safety issues.
Out of concern for the safety and well-being of the academic communities for which we are responsible, we are taking all measures to ensure safety at our universities. We appeal to the public authorities to support our efforts and to engage in a serious and substantive discussion on the sources of aggression, dehumanisation of interpersonal relations, brutalisation of language and social behaviour, including those observed in the media and politics. Together, we must develop systemic mechanisms to counteract such phenomena, and we declare the full commitment of the rectors of CRASP universities in this regard.
