
The National Science Centre has announced the results of the SONATINA 9 competition for researchers with a PhD degree who are starting their scientific careers. The University of Gdańsk came second in terms of the number of affiliated beneficiaries - as many as three people will carry out their projects at our university. The total amount of funding for scientists affiliated with the University of Gdańsk is PLN 2,425,411.
The SONATINA 9 competition was open to individuals who obtained their doctoral degree between January 1, 2022, and December 31, 2024, as well as individuals who did not yet have a doctoral degree at the time of application but committed to obtaining it by 30 June 2025. The winners of the competition receive a grant for full-time employment at a Polish research unit other than the one where they obtained their doctoral degree for 24 or 36 months, conducting research as a project manager (including remuneration for project contractors, purchase of materials and small equipment, external services, travel, etc.) and a 3- to 6-month internship at a foreign research centre. The research conducted may be of a basic or applied nature.
In the current edition of the competition, 249 applications were submitted. 50 projects received funding (the success rate was 20%). The total amount of funds allocated to finance all projects was PLN 44.7 million. At the University of Gdańsk, two grants will be implemented at the International Centre for Theory Of Quantum Technologies (ICTQT) and one at the Faculty of Languages. Winners of the competition affiliated with the University of Gdańsk:
- Dr Jorge Escandón-Monardes (project title: ‘Quantum switch with continuous control: from the fundamentals of physics to advantages in quantum computing’; unit: ICTQT);
- Dr André Hernandes Alves Malavazi (project title: ‘Modular quantum thermal devices: integrating thermal functionalities’; unit: ICTQT);
- Dr Zofia Litwinowicz-Krutnik (project title: ‘Why Salome? Transcultural and intermedial counter-narratives of the fin de siècle: mechanisms of exclusion and adaptability of myth’; unit: Faculty of Languages).
